Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong's flag carrier, is recognized as one of the world's leading airlines. Despite strong performances in its business and first-class services, both Cathay and Hong Kong are reportedly lagging behind in Asia's post-pandemic recovery.

Cathay Pacific operates with two wholly-owned subsidiaries: HK Express and Air Hong Kong. HK Express offers low-cost flights within Asia with a fleet of 36 aircraft as of June 2024. Air Hong Kong provides express cargo services across Asia with 17 aircraft at the same time. Cathay Dragon was also a subsidiary until it ceased operations in 2020.

The airline manages a total of 231 aircraft, including those operated by its subsidiaries and cargo division. The fleet serves 94 destinations globally, including major cities in mainland China. It has orders for additional aircraft such as the Airbus A330-900 and Boeing 777-9.

Founded on September 24, 1946, by Sydney H. de Kantzow from Australia and Roy C. Farrell from America, Cathay Pacific emerged shortly after World War II when Hong Kong was returned to British control.

The first aircraft used by Cathay was a Douglas DC-3 named "Betsy," which served from 1945 to 1955 before being rediscovered years later in Australia. This heritage plane now resides at the Hong Kong Science Museum.

As a founding member of the oneworld alliance since February 1, 1999, Cathay Pacific is part of an extensive network comprising over 3,300 aircraft serving around 1,000 airports worldwide.

Cathay states: "Welcome to oneworld an alliance of the world’s leading airlines committed to providing the highest level of service and convenience across more than 900 destinations worldwide."
