In the competitive landscape of commercial aviation, decisions about fleet composition are critical for airline executives. Recently, easyJet CEO Johan Lundgren shared insights into his preference for Airbus over Boeing during an interview with Bloomberg TV. This has sparked discussions on the dynamics between airlines and aircraft manufacturers.

"I think that in all fairness, all the manufacturers, whether that is Airbus or Boeing, are struggling with their supply chains as well," said Lundgren. "To the extent that the engine choices that we've made and also then going with Airbus, have a better alternative than some of our competitors are having."

EasyJet's fleet strategy highlights its loyalty to Airbus. Historically, easyJet operated Boeing 737s and 757s but has now transitioned to an all-Airbus fleet. According to Planespotters.net, this includes 47 Airbus A319s, 126 A320s, and 11 A321s. In December 2023, easyJet further cemented this relationship by ordering 157 more Airbus A320neo family aircraft.

Lundgren commented on easyJet's partnership with CFM International: "This agreement for more than 300 engines will provide important environmental benefits through a significant improvement in fuel efficiency and a reduction in noise as well as enable easyJet to continue to affirm its leading position at Europe's primary airports."

The collaboration with CFM aligns with easyJet's sustainability goals. The LEAP-1A engines offer significant improvements in fuel consumption and emissions reduction.

Airbus' consistency and innovation seem to be factors in Lundgren's public preference. EasyJet's reliance on CFM engines has helped avoid disruptions faced by other airlines using Pratt & Whitney's GTF engines. These have been subject to mandatory inspections due to defects.

Boeing has faced challenges including delays in certifying the Boeing 737 MAX series after two fatal crashes led to grounding issues. The delays have raised concerns among airlines about Boeing's ability to meet delivery timelines.

EasyJet reported record pre-tax earnings of £610 million ($768.35 million) during a successful summer period, contrasting with declining profits for competitors Ryanair and Wizz Air.

Several factors make Airbus appealing for easyJet:

- Fleet Commonality: Simplifies operations and reduces training costs.

- Supply Chain Reliability: CFM engines have been reliable compared to others.

- Environmental Goals: Aligns with easyJet’s commitment to sustainability.

Despite advantages for Airbus, both manufacturers face supply chain disruptions affecting deliveries. According to Bloomberg, Airbus must deliver approximately 130 planes in December to meet its revised goal of 770 units for the year.

Johan Lundgren’s preference underscores strategic business considerations rather than personal bias amidst complex industry challenges.
