Every morning, Delta Air Lines' Flight 5382 departs from T.F. Green International Airport in Providence, Rhode Island, bound for New York's LaGuardia Airport. This early morning flight is part of a routine schedule that will soon come to an end. On December 23rd, 2024, Delta will cease its service between Providence and LaGuardia, marking the end of its flights from Providence to other Northeast hubs.

The decision to discontinue this route is attributed to several factors. According to the Centre for Aviation, Delta will maintain services only to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport from Providence.

In recent years, T.F. Green Airport has seen significant changes in its service offerings post-COVID-19 pandemic. However, Delta has opted not to expand its operations there but rather focus on increasing routes from Boston Logan International Airport.

Southwest Airlines has expanded its presence at T.F. Green by adding new destinations such as Nashville and Palm Beach over the next five weeks. With more than 1.2 million passengers transported via T.F. Green this year and a market share of about 33%, Southwest remains the largest carrier at the facility.

Additionally, Breeze Airways has established one of its largest operating bases at T.F. Green and serves various vacation destinations across the U.S., with plans for further growth potentially including international routes.

Delta's once-daily LGA-PVD flight connected Providence to its broader network through New York, catering primarily to business travelers who value convenience and connections across the Eastern United States. However, increased competition offering nonstop flights and proximity to Boston Logan make this route less appealing for business travelers post-pandemic.

Aviation A2Z notes that Delta's nonstop flight was a slot-covering service at LaGuardia Airport allowing it control over landing and takeoff slots required for operation. The airline may have found alternative uses for these slots by possibly enhancing capacity on existing routes from LaGuardia.
