Romanian airline Animawings has taken delivery of its first Airbus A220-300 aircraft, marking a significant milestone in its fleet modernization efforts. The acquisition is part of an agreement with commercial aircraft lessor Azorra, which maintains a robust partnership with Airbus.

The new aircraft was assembled at the Airbus facility in Mirabel, Canada, and arrived in Bucharest on December 16. John Evans, CEO and Founder of Azorra, expressed his satisfaction with the delivery: "We are proud to deliver the first new Airbus A220-300 to our friends at AnimaWings, made possible through our strong relationship with Airbus. This marks a significant milestone as the first of its type in Romania. With its unmatched performance and efficiency, this aircraft is perfectly suited to support AnimaWings growth objectives and will play a vital role in the future of aviation in Romania."

Azorra has delivered three A220-300s from its firm order book with Airbus to various airline customers globally. Animawings plans to receive six A220s from Azorra and has become the first Romanian airline to operate this model and the tenth operator in Europe.

Animawings aims to expand its flight offerings using the A220. The aircraft's inaugural flight will be between Bucharest and Dubai on December 27, with plans for additional routes including Paris, Stockholm, Larnaca, Marrakesh, Nice, Ibiza, Cluj, Iași, and Oradea. The company also plans charter flights to destinations such as Greece, Turkey, Spain, and Portugal during summer 2025. Marius Pandel, an Animawings shareholder, stated: "We are delighted to be the first company in Romania to have in its fleet such a modern and spacious aircraft...these aircraft...will ensure the full comfort of our passengers."

Earlier this year saw changes in Animawings' ownership structure. In 2021, Aegean Airlines increased its stake from 25% to 51% but later divested it entirely to Memento Group. This transition led to a fleet restructuring that involved returning leased aircraft from Aegean and planning upgrades with new-generation planes like the A220 and A320neo family.

Marius Pandel previously commented on management goals: "the preferred airline of Romanians – and to keep the standards of Romanian aviation as high as possible." Currently operating only two planes—the newly acquired A220 and an older A320—Animawings is focusing on fleet modernization aligned with sustainability goals.

The inclusion of the latest Airbus jet supports these goals by reducing noise by 50%, CO2 emissions by 25%, fuel consumption by 25%, and allowing operation on up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
