Two United Airlines flights on the Chicago-Zurich route were diverted due to crew issues on Sunday. The flight from Zurich to Chicago made a stop in Halifax, while the outbound flight from Chicago returned to O'Hare Airport.

The first incident involved flight UA12 from Zurich Airport to Chicago O'Hare, which had a planned stop at Halifax Stanfield International Airport due to a pilot calling in sick. A United Airlines spokesperson explained, "The flight was originally delayed in Zurich due to a pilot calling in sick, and the flight stopped in Halifax to recrew before our pilots exceeded their legally permitted duty hours." After picking up two new pilots, the Boeing 767-300 continued its journey and landed in Chicago seven hours later than scheduled.

Meanwhile, passengers flying from Chicago to Zurich faced further delays. Flight UA3 departed as scheduled but turned back after four hours and fifteen minutes due to a medical issue with a flight attendant. The aircraft landed at Gander International Airport before returning to Chicago. United Airlines stated, "On Sunday, our flight from Chicago to Zurich landed at Gander International Airport to address a medical issue with a flight attendant."

The return trip took off early Monday morning and arrived back in Chicago. Passengers were rebooked on another flight set for departure later that day. As a result of these diversions, the Monday UA12 service from Zurich was canceled.
