Zhao Dong President of Xiamen Airlines | Xiamen Airlines

On December 2, 2024, Ian Phillips, Director of the UN News and Media Division, Department of Global Communications, visited Xiamen Airlines to study its cooperation in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Representing the Secretariat of the United Nations Headquarters, Phillips praised Xiamen Airlines for its dedication to sustainable development practices within the aviation sector.

Phillips learned about the history of collaboration between Xiamen Airlines and the United Nations. He noted that as the first airline to sign a cooperation agreement with the UN on SDGs, Xiamen Airlines has set an example by promoting enterprise participation in global development. "Xiamen Airlines has taken a good lead in promoting the participation of enterprises and organizations in global development," he stated. The airline's efforts provide a "China Solution" and "Civil Aviation Wisdom" towards achieving worldwide sustainable development.

In his visit to Xiamen Airlines' Media Center, Phillips participated in a live stream session where he engaged with online viewers. He explored initiatives like the "Xiamen Airlines Farm" platform aimed at advancing SDGs by supporting farmers through live streaming sales.

During his time in Xiamen, Phillips visited Little Galley Coffee (Kulangsu), owned by Xiamen Airlines. There he discovered coffee cups and straws made from recycled coffee grounds instead of plastic. Expressing his admiration for these efforts, he remarked: "It's really impressive!" Phillips documented this innovative practice related to sustainability goals by taking photos and nodding frequently during explanations.

The partnership between Xiamen Airlines and the United Nations began in 2017 and has continued for over seven years. Throughout this period, Xiamen Airlines has been committed to supporting SDG implementation through energy conservation initiatives, themed flights promoting SDGs, and organizing public welfare events. These actions have gained international recognition and serve as valuable examples for other corporations aiming to advance SDG objectives.
