Singapore Changi Airport, one of the busiest international airports globally, is set to expand with the construction of a new Terminal 5. This expansion is part of the Changi East Development project and aims to address the airport's current capacity constraints. The facility processed over 58 million passengers last year, ranking it as the fifth-largest airport worldwide by international passenger numbers.

The development of Terminal 5 was initially announced in May 2013 by then Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew. The project is supported by Singapore's Ministry of Transport, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, and Changi Airport Group. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, plans were delayed for two years. In 2022, former Transport Minister S Irawan stated, "We have taken the opportunity of the two-year hiatus to comprehensively review the T5 design to make it more modular and flexible, and enhance its resilience and sustainability."

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025 on a site covering over 1,080 hectares. The first phase will accommodate up to 50 million passengers annually. Upon completion in the mid-2030s, Terminal 5 will increase Singapore Changi Airport's capacity to over 153 million passengers per year.

Terminal 5 will integrate advanced technologies such as autonomous vehicles and baggage-handling robots. It will also focus on sustainability with features like solar panels and smart building management systems. The terminal aims for Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy Building certification from Singapore's Building and Construction Authority.

The Changi East Development includes a three-runway system extension and a new industrial zone for airfreight activities. These developments are designed to maintain Singapore Changi Airport's status as a leading global hub.

Singapore Airlines operates a significant fleet from this hub, connecting to destinations such as London Heathrow and New York JFK. Cargo operators like DHL Aviation and FedEx Express also use these facilities extensively.

The expansion efforts aim to future-proof Singapore Changi Airport against regional competition and evolving aviation technology trends.
