The Italian Ministry of Business and Made in Italy approved the acquisition of Piaggio Aerospace by Turkish defense company Baykar on December 27, 2024. This decision marks Baykar as the final winner of an international tender to acquire the Italian aircraft and engine manufacturer.

Piaggio Aerospace, founded in Genoa, Italy, in 1884, has a long history in aviation. It gained recognition for its aircraft models such as the P.136, P.149, P.166 utility transport, and the P.180 Avanti business jet. Despite facing financial difficulties that led to bankruptcy declarations in the late 1990s and again in 2018, Piaggio has maintained operations due to continued demand for its products.

Italy’s Minister of Business and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, emphasized the importance of this acquisition for preserving jobs and securing a strategic industrial asset for Italy. Urso stated that it provides a "clear and ambitious" industrial perspective that ensures Piaggio Aerospace's production prospects.

For Baykar, acquiring Piaggio Aerospace offers several strategic advantages: entering the European market under EU regulations; enhancing its international standing through association with an EU member country; achieving technological independence by investing $300 million over five years to develop turboprop and turbofan engines; increasing production capacity using existing Piaggio facilities; and diversifying its market offerings by integrating manned aircraft construction expertise from Piaggio.

The acquisition also benefits Piaggio Aerospace by providing financial stability, access to the growing UAV market through integration with Baykar’s technology, enhanced manufacturing capabilities due to investment from Baykar, and a strengthened long-term outlook within the aerospace sector.

Baykar is known internationally for its affordable high-performance UAVs used in military operations worldwide. The company's platforms serve multiple countries including Ethiopia, Qatar, Ukraine, and Azerbaijan. With plans to expand production of new models while maintaining current ones like TB2 drones—credited with successful missions since 2014—Baykar aims at future dominance in autonomous combat drones.

The merger between Baykar's growth in UAV technology and Piaggio’s aeronautical experience suggests promising prospects for innovation within Europe’s military drone market. This deal reflects broader trends where firms use acquisitions strategically amidst rising R&D costs and global competition pressures across industries like aerospace.
