Pilatus Aircraft, a major European manufacturer of general and private aviation aircraft, has a long history dating back to its founding in December 1939. Initially established to produce Spitfire fighter aircraft for the Swiss Air Force, the company pivoted towards maintenance and repair contracts when Switzerland opted to purchase completed aircraft from Messerschmitt.

Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Pilatus developed various aircraft models, including the P-2 trainer and P-4 light transport aircraft. However, commercial success came later with the PC-6 Porter in the late 1950s. This short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft gained popularity in the United States.

In subsequent decades, Pilatus introduced several successful models like the PC-7 Turbo Trainer and PC-9. The most notable was the PC-12 single-engine turboprop launched in the late 1980s. Over 2,000 units have been produced, making it one of the best-selling turboprop planes globally.

Building on this success, Pilatus entered the private aviation market with the PC-24 business jet. "The aircraft simply doesn't fit into any of the existing business jet categories," said Oscar Schwenk at its introduction during EBACE in Geneva in May 2013.

The PC-24 made its first flight in 2015 and achieved certification from both FAA and EASA by December 2017. It is used by charter companies such as PlaneSense and FlyingGroup, for medical evacuations by organizations like NSW Ambulance, and by government entities including Spain's national police force.

Design features include a conventional low-wing structure with a T-tail powered by two Williams FJ44 turbofan engines. The plane offers performance specifications such as a maximum takeoff weight of 18,700 pounds and a range of 2,100 nautical miles.

The cost to purchase a new Pilatus PC-24 ranges between $13 million to $14 million according to GuardianJet. Used models can cost up to $12 million or as low as $8.5 million depending on age and flight hours. Operating costs are significant; fixed costs alone amount to $250,000-$300,000 annually while variable costs can exceed $1.2 million based on usage.
