Chase has announced the first-quarter bonus categories for its Freedom and Freedom Flex credit cards, offering cardholders opportunities to earn additional rewards. From now until March 31, cardholders can receive 5% cash back on select grocery store purchases, fitness club and gym memberships, self-care and spa services, as well as Norwegian Cruise Line bookings made directly with the cruise line.

A "birthday surprise category" will be introduced in March to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Freedom card's launch. According to Doctor of Credit, this surprise category is expected to include insurance payments and tax preparation services. However, these details are subject to change or may be targeted at specific cardholders.

Cardholders must activate their cards to access these bonus categories. The process involves providing personal information such as last name, last four digits of the card number, and ZIP code through Chase's website or mobile app.

The rotating categories allow cardholders to earn up to $75 in cash back each quarter by spending up to $1,500 in combined bonus categories after activation. This translates into potential annual earnings of up to $300 for those who maximize their spending within these categories.

For those interested in combining points from different Chase cards, pairing a Freedom or Freedom Flex with a premium product like the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card allows for point transfers across travel partners such as Southwest Airlines and Hyatt.

Chase's quarterly bonus categories have varied over time but frequently include options like grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, and more. This variety enables cardholders to potentially earn significant rewards based on their spending habits throughout the year.

Overall, this quarter offers an opportunity for cardholders focusing on health and wellness goals or planning vacations via Norwegian Cruise Line to earn extra rewards while making everyday purchases.
