Southwest Airlines has developed its network over the past five decades, expanding across North America. The airline started operations in June 1971 with routes connecting Dallas’ Love Field, Houston Intercontinental Airport, and San Antonio. Over time, it has grown into a complex network.

While Southwest is primarily known as a point-to-point carrier, some of its bases have become crucial for passenger connectivity. Airports like Denver, Baltimore, and Chicago Midway serve as "rolling hubs," allowing quick turnaround times for flights to enhance aircraft utilization.

Chicago Midway stands out as one of Southwest's busiest cities. The airline entered this market on March 17, 1985, with eight daily departures to St. Louis, Missouri. It quickly became an important destination for the carrier. According to Department of Transportation Statistics, Chicago Midway ranks as the second-busiest destination in Southwest’s network based on passengers carried. In the year ending October 2024, more than 10 million passengers traveled through this airport via Southwest.

The airline operates up to 250 daily departures from Chicago Midway to 79 cities and employs over 6,000 workers there. It dominates the market by carrying more than 90% of Midway’s passengers using its 37 gates at the airport.

Despite having numerous nonstop flights from Chicago Midway, data from aviation analytics firm Cirium reveals that certain routes are flown more frequently than others. In January 2025, Southwest's top fifteen busiest routes from Chicago include key bases and popular destinations:

1. New York LaGuardia Airport: With "201 monthly flights," New York City is a major destination served by Southwest solely through LaGuardia International Airport.

2. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport: Hosting "198 monthly flights," Phoenix serves as a significant base for Southwest.

3. Orlando International Airport: With "193 monthly flights," Orlando remains a top route due to its popularity as a vacation spot.

4. Denver International Airport: Offering "190 monthly flights," Denver plays an essential role in connecting passengers across North America.

5. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport: This route sees "179 monthly flights" to the U.S capital.
