Lufthansa has announced the completion of its Lockheed L-1649A Starliner restoration, also known as the 'Super Star,' a significant milestone in preparation for its centennial celebrations in 2026. The aircraft, which was part of Lufthansa's fleet during the 1950s, has been meticulously restored by Lufthansa Technik.

The fully assembled aircraft emerged from its Hamburg hangar on January 17, moving on its landing gear without power. This marks a pivotal moment for the airline as it revives a piece of aviation history. "A particular highlight of the non-airworthy assembly is the fact that the cockpit is as true to the original as possible from the 1950s," noted Lufthansa.

The restoration process involved assembling several large components received in October 2023, including fuselage and wings, alongside numerous smaller parts stored in wooden crates. However, after leaving Hamburg, the aircraft will be dismantled again for transport to Münster/Osnabrück Airport (FMO) in July for painting in original Lufthansa colors.

Inside, historical and modern elements blend with seats repurposed from an Airbus A340 and redesigned with wine-red leather upholstery. The carpet and curtains draw inspiration from past designs.

Historically significant, this aircraft joined Lufthansa's fleet in 1957 and began Transatlantic flights on March 17, 1958. These flights were notable for their duration of up to 17 hours and typically departed from Hamburg Airport due to maintenance facilities there. "An exclusive Lufthansa First Class cabin with 32 seats... made the plane unforgettable," according to statements from Lufthansa.

Once painted, the 'Super Star' will move to Frankfurt Airport by October where it will be displayed alongside another vintage aircraft, a Junkers Ju 52 registered as D-AQUI. Both planes will feature prominently at Lufthansa Group’s new conference and visitor center opening in spring 2026.
