The Embraer Legacy 500, introduced by the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer in 2008, was designed as a mid-sized business jet equipped with advanced technology. The aircraft aimed to offer a comfortable and efficient option for medium-haul international travel. It first flew in 2012 and underwent extensive flight testing before receiving certification from Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2014. Deliveries began that same year, with 80 units produced until production ceased in 2020.

The Legacy 500 is powered by Honeywell HTF7500E turbofan engines, known for their performance and environmental efficiency. In a press release from 2015, Embraer highlighted that the jet had set four world speed records for "Speed over a Recognized Course." These achievements underscored its design capabilities. The engines are noted for their long overhaul intervals of up to 7,000 flight hours.

A standout feature of the Legacy 500 is its six-foot flat-floor cabin, which was unique at its introduction. This spacious interior accommodates eight to twelve passengers comfortably and includes luxurious amenities such as LED lighting and a well-equipped kitchen.

In terms of connectivity, Flexjet's European fleet of Legacy 500s has been fitted with Ka-Band technology since 2022. This upgrade enhances internet connectivity during flights, allowing seamless access to high-speed internet services globally.

The aircraft also pioneered Fly-By-Wire technology in its class, replacing traditional manual controls with electronic systems that enhance stability and reduce weight. The Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics suite supports these features with advanced graphical flight planning capabilities.

Despite production ending in favor of newer models like the Praetor series, the Legacy 500 remains competitive due to its technological advancements and comfort features. Pre-owned models are valued at over $8 million as of January 2024, reflecting their continued appeal in the business aviation market.

Embraer's shift towards newer models like the Praetor series has seen significant developments. In a press release from 2023, Embraer announced an agreement with NetJets for up to 250 Praetor jets valued at over five billion dollars.
