"We will submit our plans for a third runway to Government this summer," stated Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye during a speech at British Steel's Scunthorpe plant. He confirmed that the expansion would include upgrades to terminal buildings aimed at enhancing passenger experience and improving resilience and sustainability.
Woldbye hopes the third runway will be operational before the end of the next U.K. parliamentary term, potentially by 2035. However, given past debates over the airport's expansion plans, legal challenges are anticipated.
The proposed expansion could benefit travelers by increasing flight capacity and offering more direct flights from North America along with new routes. It may also address current congestion issues at Heathrow.
Upgrades to terminals 2 and 5 are planned as part of these investments, aiming to improve passenger flow and security operations significantly.
Despite recent support from the U.K. government, Heathrow's expansion faces opposition from environmental groups and local communities concerned about increased carbon emissions impacting climate targets. Legal challenges could delay progress further.
"This project can only go ahead if we meet the rules on noise, air quality and carbon that the Government sets out in the Airports National Policy Statement — it's as simple as that," Woldbye noted.
In his remarks, Woldbye emphasized commitments to sustainable aviation fuel use and reducing noise footprints as part of their environmental strategy.

While terminal expansions are expected later this year promising immediate benefits for travelers, the timeline for completing the third runway remains uncertain due to potential legal hurdles delaying construction well beyond initial estimates set by U.K Chancellor Rachel Reeves who has previously expressed her desire for construction commencement by 2029 with operations starting by 2035.
