An American Airlines flight from Charlotte to Nassau had to return to its departure airport shortly after takeoff due to a mechanical issue. The incident occurred on February 22, involving a Boeing 737-800 that reached an altitude of 21,000 feet before circling back to Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

The airline's spokesperson stated, "On Feb. 22, American Airlines flight 859 with service from Charlotte (CLT) to Nassau (NAS) returned to CLT shortly after takeoff due to a mechanical issue. The flight landed safely and taxied to the gate under its own power. The aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team. Customers boarded a replacement aircraft to continue to NAS. We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience this caused."

Flight AA 859 is a scheduled service using a Boeing 737-800, which can seat up to 172 passengers across different classes. The aircraft involved in the incident is registered as N928AN and has been in service since February 2000.

In other recent aviation news, similar incidents have occurred with other airlines. A Delta Air Lines flight from Los Angeles had to return due to smoke in the galley, while a United Airlines flight turned back because of a windshield issue.

American Airlines has also been expanding its routes, including reintroducing its longest domestic route from Chicago O'Hare to Honolulu using a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner starting in October.
