In April 2023, a shipping container arrived at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport from Zurich, Switzerland. Within that container were 6,600 gold bars worth 20 million and about 2.5 million in foreign currency - with these figures being Canadian dollars. But shortly after the precious shipment arrived at Air Canada’s cargo facilities, it was gone.

The incident has come to be known as the 'Air Canada Gold Heist' of 2023. The details surrounding the heist remain unclear, with investigations ongoing and few leads available.

According to reports, the gold and currency were securely stored in a shipping container upon arrival. However, despite security measures in place at one of Canada’s busiest airports, the entire shipment disappeared without a trace.

Authorities have been tight-lipped about potential suspects or methods used in the heist. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and other law enforcement agencies are involved in the investigation but have released limited information to the public.

This heist is considered one of Canada’s largest thefts involving such a high- value cargo. It has raised concerns over security protocols at major transport hubs and prompted reviews of current practices to prevent similar incidents in future.

As investigations continue into this audacious theft, both authorities and Air Canada are under pressure to unravel what happened during this remarkable case of missing gold.
