UK Transport Secretary: ‘I have no intention of clipping anyone’s wings’ on Gatwick expansion

According to the UK government website, officials have said that the project must align with the country’s climate commitments. Ministers believe advancements in quieter aircraft and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will help reduce the environmental impact of the increased flights.

The Guardian reported that environmental groups have opposed the expansion, warning of legal action over noise pollution, carbon emissions, and added pressure on local infrastructure. Activists criticized the government’s decision, arguing that the project contradicts the UK’s climate commitments.

The Civil Aviation Authority has backed the expansion, stating that additional capacity at Gatwick would provide "benefits to consumers," such as more destination choices, increased competition among airlines, and improved airport infrastructure resilience.

Gatwick Airport is the second-busiest airport in the UK, handling over 46 million passengers annually. According to its website, it operates as a major international hub, providing connections to more than 200 destinations worldwide.
