Austin is likely to begin offering direct flights to various Asian destinations in the near future. Direct service to Asia will make travel more convenient for residents and visitors, making reconnecting with family or exploring business opportunities easier.

Kevin Schorr, the Vice President of the Campbell-Hill Aviation Group, recently shared insights into the exciting developments at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). He indicated that productive discussions are underway with various Asian airlines to establish direct routes connecting Austin with major destinations across Asia.

Campbell-Hill Aviation Group works with airlines and airports to secure new nonstop services. Schorr expressed optimism about the outcomes of these talks and their positive implications for the Austin community. In a conversation with the Advisory Commission, Schorr said:

“We talk to the airlines as often as we can to help them understand not just what’s happening in the Austin community and in Central Texas, but most importantly, we want to help them understand how many new Asian businesses are opening up, how many Asians are moving into the area. ”

Although specific cities and airlines were not mentioned, a memo from 2019 highlights that airport officials have expressed interest in expanding into the Asian market for several years. This strategic interest is evident in the memo, which identifies key cities such as Beijing, Seoul, Shanghai, and Tokyo as potential new routes that the airport could explore. Schorr added:

“We do believe we’re in the best position we’ve ever been, so it’s really a matter of time for Austin to fit in with an airline’s strategy and corporate strategy in terms of their desire to expand to North America. Asian airlines are global, so we are fighting for that same aircraft as is a city in India, as a city in Europe, as a city in every part of the world. ”

Speculation on Austin's potential direct Asian routes

On online forums like Reddit, Austin residents discuss and speculate about nonstop destinations that may become available. Among the most popular hopes are direct flights to international hubs; particularly there is curiosity about the potential for a nonstop route to Incheon International Airport (ICN) in South Korea.

This interest aligns with Delta Air Lines' recent expansion of its presence in Austin which has sparked conversations about possible new routes. Delta Air Lines—a member of SkyTeam alliance—has been increasing its flight offerings in various markets. Furthermore, Delta is a codeshare partner with Korean Air, which adds to speculation.

Delta's recent expansion in Austin

Starting this spring, Delta Air Lines has added five new nonstop destinations from Austin: Memphis Tennessee; Panama City Florida; Tampa Florida; San Francisco California; and Indianapolis Indiana. These additions make Delta th- e second-largest market share based on daily departing flights; these services will operate daily.
