American Airlines expands Caribbean network with new South Caicos route

American Airlines has expanded its Caribbean reach, now serving 43 Caribbean airports. According to Cirium Diio data, American Airlines operates one in ten of the region's services, a figure that rises to nearly one in four (23%) for all US-Caribbean flights. This makes it the leading short-haul international operator in the US, bolstered by its strong network connections to Mexico and Canada.

On March 15, American Eagle inaugurated its first service from Miami to South Caicos. This flight marks the first US link to South Caicos. According to the Turks and Caicos Islands government, South Caicos is the country's fourth most populous island but ranks seventh by area.

The route was initially scheduled to start on February 15 but was shifted due to significant infrastructure redevelopment at South Caicos Airport. The twice-weekly flights are operated by Envoy Air's Embraer E175s, covering a distance of 546 nautical miles each way.

''Perhaps the changing launch date reflected South Caicos Airport's significant infrastructure redevelopment to facilitate the new route and more,'' an observation noted regarding schedule adjustments.

The market for US-South Caicos travel is currently minimal; however, American Eagle expects traffic to increase with this new nonstop service. ''American Eagle will quickly increase traffic with the new nonstop service,'' said an industry insider.

With this addition, American Airlines' full US-Caribbean network for March- December 2025 includes:

- Boston: 3 routes

- Charlotte: 24 routes

- Chicago O'Hare: 8 routes

- Dallas/Fort Worth: 8 routes

- Miami: 43 routes

- New York JFK: 11 routes

- New York LaGuardia:1 route

- Philadelphia:12 routes

- Washington Reagan:2 routes

Miami serves all forty-three Caribbean airports alone.

South Caicos is the only addition compared to last year; however, Port-au-Prince in Haiti remains unserved due to safety concerns.

For March17-23,2025 period alone,Amercian has scheduled1067one-way flights or approximately152daily services.This represents a6%increase from last year and a28%rise from pre-pandemic levelsin2019.Seats per flight have marginally risen over time too.One-in-seven services are onEagle'sregional jets,normallyEnvoy Air'sE175s operating fromMiamiandCharlotte.Widebodies likeAmerican deployingthe777-200ERfromDallas/Fort WorthtoSan Juan untilMarch26are also used.
