American Airlines is set to resume its long-haul service between Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA). The airline plans to operate this route seasonally from November 20, 2025, through February 28, 2026. Flights will run daily from November 20, 2025, until January 6, 2026. After a six-week break, daily flights will resume on February 12, 2026.

The route will be serviced by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with a seating capacity of 234 passengers. This includes various classes such as Flagship Business pods and premium economy recliners. American Airlines last operated this route in January 2022.

This move follows Delta Air Lines' recent announcement of a new Kona route from Salt Lake City using a Boeing 767-300ER. The increased attention on Hawaii's Big Island comes despite it being less popular than other Hawaiian destinations like Oahu and Maui.

Airlines often redirect wide-body jets during the winter when transatlantic travel decreases. Oceania and some African destinations have been favored spots for these aircraft in past years. Hawaii remains an attractive destination for network planners due to its appeal to travelers seeking warmer climates.

Additionally, American Airlines has added a second daily flight from DFW to Maui's Kahului Airport during the peak winter season. This expansion reflects airlines' strategies to utilize their larger aircraft efficiently during off-peak seasons.

Increased competition among airlines typically benefits travelers through more frequent fare options and enhanced availability of upgrades and awards.
