Delta Air Lines Airbus A350-900 | Official Website

Delta Air Lines has made changes to its flight operations between Detroit and Los Angeles, removing the Airbus A350-900 from the route's schedule. This adjustment will take effect on March 30, coinciding with the conclusion of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) winter season.

According to Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning tool, Delta will replace the A350-900 with an Airbus A330-200 for flight DL883 from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on March 31. The A330-200 is scheduled to remain in service until May 6.

In May, Delta plans to utilize the Airbus A321ceo and Boeing 737-900ER for the 41 weekly flights between these two cities. The configurations of Delta's A321ceo and A321neo aircraft differ slightly. The A321ceo features 20 first-class seats, 29 Delta Comfort+ seats, and 142 Main Cabin seats, totaling 191 seats. In contrast, the A321neo offers 20 first-class seats, 42 Delta Comfort+ seats, and 142 Main Cabin seats, totaling 194 seats.

Cirium’s data indicates that in May, the average A321 departure from Detroit to Los Angeles will have a seating capacity of 191, suggesting that the A321neo will not replace either the A350-900 or the A330-200 at this time.

By July, Delta intends to use both the A321neo and other aircraft models like the Boeing 737-900ER alongside existing options for flights between Detroit and Los Angeles. The carrier plans to operate up to 49 weekly frequencies during this peak period.

As part of future adjustments starting in September, Delta will substitute the Boeing 737-900 with a Boeing 757-300 on select double-daily routes between these destinations.

Delta initially deployed the Airbus A350-900 on this route in July 2024 and continued using it through November into March of this year for daily services.

Additionally, Cirium’s Diio Mi shows that in March next year, Delta's domestic widebody operations are expected to peak with approximately 612 weekly departures using twin-aisle jets across various routes. These include short-haul flights like those between Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and Orlando International Airport (MCO), as well as long-haul flights such as those connecting Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) with Honolulu Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL).
