IATA, the International Air Transport Association, has launched an information portal aimed at facilitating the shipment of live animals. This new tool, named LAR Verify, is designed to streamline access to regulations and improve data sharing regarding live animal shipments, which have seen an 11% increase since 2019, approaching 200,000 shipments globally in 2024.

Highlighting the significance of this development, Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo, stated, "The volume of specialized cargo—live animals in particular—continues to grow. To manage this opportunity safely and efficiently, a single digital portal that provides access to relevant LAR regulations and facilitates data sharing is mission critical." Sullivan views the LAR Verify tool as a substantial advancement towards a centralized and reliable source for live animal transportation.

The portal, designed with compatibility in mind, can be integrated into existing cargo management systems. LAR Verify offers comprehensive information on topics such as state and operator regulations for the export, import, transit, and transfer of live animals, as well as documentation requirements like import licenses. It also covers animal classifications, container requirements, and necessary labeling. Additionally, LAR Verify provides live updates on regional embargoes and trade regulations, which include protocols for dealing with disease outbreaks.

An API allows shippers and freight forwarders to upload required documents for airline verification. This digital procedure ensures that airlines can give physical acceptance of the cargo without having to move live animals until travel is confirmed.
