Scandinavian Airlines has announced a return to offering European business class on its short-haul flights, marking the first time in 15 years the carrier will offer a dedicated premium cabin on these routes. The changes are set to take effect starting October 1, with ticket sales beginning May 6.

This move comes as SAS aims to meet rising demand for improved services among travelers, specifically concerning the "soft product" offerings. "Many of our comfort- and quality-focused travelers expect a clearly-defined European Business Class that aligns with international standards," stated SAS Chief Commercial Officer Paul Verhagen.

The new business-class cabin will consist of the standard European arrangement: coach-type seats with the middle seat blocked off and a curtain that separates the premium area from the rest of the aircraft. This approach is common among European airlines and mirrors the concept introduced by U.S. budget carrier Frontier Airlines last year.

Passengers flying in SAS' business class can expect enhanced amenities, including priority boarding and a revised inflight dining menu served with reusable porcelain tableware. The airline seeks to provide a premium experience comparable to top European carriers. Verhagen noted, "While SAS Plus has provided an upgraded experience, it has lacked the recognition and clarity that travelers seek. With the reintroduction of European Business Class, we are ensuring that SAS offers the premium experience of a top European airline."

This initiative is likely to be beneficial for U.S. travelers who currently face a stark transition from SAS' long-haul business class—such as Delta's Delta One lie-flat seats—to a standard coach-type seat on connecting flights within Europe. Now, these passengers will receive some level of genuine priority service and a full meal.

SAS, a recent member of the SkyTeam alliance, continues to expand its collaboration with Delta Air Lines, its SkyTeam partner. Beginning next month, SAS will operate a nonstop service from Copenhagen to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, further strengthening its network with Delta hubs such as those in Atlanta and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Travelers interested in booking flights with SAS using points or miles are encouraged to explore options through partners like Air France, KLM's Flying Blue loyalty program, or Delta's SkyMiles program, as these platforms offer potential pathways for redeeming awards on SAS flights.
