Alaska Airlines has announced an expansion to its network from San Diego International Airport. The Seattle-based carrier is introducing flights to Chicago, Denver, and Phoenix, each operating three times daily year-round. The flights to Chicago and Phoenix will utilize Boeing 737 aircraft, while the Denver route will employ a mix of Boeing 737 and Embraer E175 aircraft. The Phoenix service is set to begin on August 20, with Chicago and Denver following on October 4.

In addition to the new routes, Alaska Airlines plans to enhance connectivity on the West Coast by adding two daily frequencies to four cities: Las Vegas, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, and San Jose, California. Starting October 26, all these destinations will be offered six times daily, except Salt Lake City, which will have three daily flights.

Alaska Airlines will face competition from Southwest Airlines, American Airlines, and United Airlines on these new routes. Each competitor already provides multiple daily flights from San Diego to the respective destinations.

The purpose of the new routes and increased frequencies is to improve connectivity in the San Diego area. According to Alaska Airlines, these changes will enable it to serve 44 nonstop destinations from San Diego, the most by any airline at the airport, with over 90 peak-day departures. Ben Minicucci, CEO of Alaska Air Group, stated, "We're proud to already serve San Diego and the surrounding region with the most nonstop destinations from San Diego. These exciting new additions to our network further expand our ability to take San Diegans directly to where they want to go, better than any other airline, with our premium onboard service and global loyalty program."

This expansion follows Alaska Airlines' recent exit from four high-profile routes. Despite these changes, San Diego remains a successful market for the carrier, unlike some other more business-focused airports.
