Denver recently marked a significant milestone as Lufthansa's Airbus A380 began its regular service to the city, arriving at Denver International Airport (DEN) on Wednesday afternoon. This marks the first scheduled passenger A380 flight at the airport, though the jumbo jet has landed there before.

Lufthansa's flight LH480 departed from Munich Airport at 11:15 local time and reached Denver at 13:40, after a 10 hour, 25-minute journey. The aircraft, registered as D-AIMK, began its flight by climbing to 36,000 feet, eventually reaching 40,000 feet during the journey.

Phil Washington, DEN's CEO, remarked on the airport's new service, "This is a fantastic thing for Denver. We’re opening the world to Denver… for young people that live in the region, for old people that live in the region, for middle-aged folks that live in the region, you’re witnessing an opening of the Rocky Mountain region to the rest of the world. And that’s a fantastic thing."

Previously, the Munich-Denver route was serviced with Lufthansa’s A350-900s. The A380 upgrade is expected to increase capacity by 75% over the coming five months. The A380 can accommodate 509 passengers in a four-class configuration, compared to the A350-900’s 292-passenger capacity.

The A380's daily operations are set to continue through September 30, after which the A350-900 is expected to resume service. However, Washington noted that DEN will continue discussions with Lufthansa about future options.

The airport is equipped for the A380, with gate A41 ready to accommodate the large aircraft. DEN also boasts the longest commercial runway in the US, enabling it to handle large planes.

An earlier visit by an A380 occurred in 2018, when an Air France aircraft diverted to DEN for a medical emergency. At that time, the airport lacked some resources to support the aircraft, though these issues have since been addressed.
