WestJet has announced the suspension of nine routes to the United States due to low demand, with plans to redeploy aircraft within Canada. This decision comes amid trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa. In response, WestJet is introducing four new domestic routes connecting Canada's East and West Coasts.

The airline's CEO, Alexis von Hoensbroech, oversees operations from hubs in Calgary, Toronto, and Vancouver. Founded in 1994, WestJet continues to adapt its services based on market conditions.

Among the suspended routes is Calgary to Fort Lauderdale, which will see a one-month suspension in June. A spokesperson for WestJet told Global News: “WestJet continuously evaluates and adjusts its schedule to meet demand.” Despite this change, Air Canada maintains service to Fort Lauderdale through Star Alliance partners.

Another affected route is St. John’s to Orlando, also facing a one-month suspension in June. Business Insider reported a significant drop in bookings from Canada to the US by over 70%, leading to an overall capacity cut of 3.5% in July and August. Meanwhile, demand for flights to Europe, Mexico, and the Caribbean has increased.

Winnipeg's connection to Orlando will also be paused for June. To compensate for these suspensions, Winnipeg Richardson International Airport will gain additional flights to Kelowna and Victoria.

Edmonton's route to Chicago O'Hare will be temporarily halted for June as well. The decline in trade relations between the US and Canada has impacted business travel significantly.

Las Vegas-bound flights from Winnipeg are suspended for two months starting July through August. This reflects reduced interest despite Las Vegas being a popular destination.

Edmonton's link with Atlanta faces a similar two-month suspension during July and August. CityNews Winnipeg quoted a WestJet spokesperson stating: “We remain committed to reviewing opportunities for direct service on these routes in the future.”

Kelowna’s connection with Seattle will be paused from June through August due primarily to decreased regional travel interest.

Flights from Winnipeg to Los Angeles are suspended from June through August as well but may resume by Labor Day if demand increases.

Finally, Vancouver’s route to Austin is on hold until October due primarily to economic factors affecting cross-border travel between these cities.
