Aer Lingus has announced a new short-haul route for its Airbus A330 aircraft, marking a departure from its usual long-haul operations. The airline will now operate flights between Dublin and Madrid using the A330-300, starting October 26, 2025. This move comes as part of Aer Lingus' winter schedule, which runs until March 28, 2026.

The Dublin to Madrid route will be served twice weekly on Fridays and Sundays. This deployment is aimed at accommodating weekend demand in both directions. "Shamrock," as Aer Lingus is known, will use its largest aircraft to cater to this significant local market even during the winter months.

Data indicates that approximately 63,000 round-trip passengers were transported by all airlines on this route in November and December 2024 alone. While Aer Lingus and Iberia are both owned by IAG, they do not engage in extensive codesharing. Therefore, most traffic is expected to be directly between Dublin and Madrid.

In addition to these A330 flights, Aer Lingus will continue operating eight weekly flights on the same route using its smaller A320ceo aircraft. These flights are scheduled for Mondays through Thursdays and Saturdays.

Aer Lingus' decision to utilize widebody aircraft on shorter routes aligns with practices seen in other airlines like Turkish Airlines and Finnair. This strategy allows for increased freight transport capacity and improved aircraft utilization.

The new service to Madrid joins other short-haul routes operated by Aer Lingus' A330s, including those to Faro and Malaga. The airline also continues its long-haul services from Dublin to destinations such as Boston and New York JFK.

The longest route in Aer Lingus' network remains the Dublin to Los Angeles flight at 4,502 nautical miles each way. This route has been part of the carrier's offerings since 1999 with some interruptions due to the pandemic.
