UNI Americas has voiced its support for trade unions in Latin America, criticizing Banco Santander for alleged anti-union practices. The organization claims that finance sector workers from Argentina to Peru are experiencing layoffs, job insecurity, and harassment.

In Argentina, the Asociación Bancaria declared a nationwide alert, accusing Santander of staff reductions and violating collective agreements. Sergio Palazzo, General Secretary of La Bancaria and UNI Americas Finance vice president, stated, “Banco Santander’s attack on labour rights knows no borders.”

Brazilian unions report increased outsourcing leading to layoffs. Juvandia Moreira, President of UNI Americas Finance and CONTRAF-CUT, commented on the bank's practices: “Banco Santander cannot present itself as a responsible company while laying off, outsourcing, precarising and persecuting the very people who keep its operations running.”

Peruvian unions accuse Santander of ignoring court rulings and discriminating against union members. In Chile and Uruguay, similar issues of dismissals and hostile stances towards union organizing have been reported.

Guillermo Maffeo, Regional Director of UNI Americas Finance, announced an emergency meeting to address these concerns. He said, “We can no longer tolerate Santander’s behaviour in Latin America.”

UNI Americas calls for an end to these practices and urges national authorities to protect labor rights.
