United Airlines has inaugurated a new transatlantic flight from Newark Liberty International Airport, utilizing the Boeing 737 MAX 8. This service will connect to Funchal Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira Airport in Portugal several times a week. The route targets a niche market with lower demand but holds potential profitability.

The airline's decision aligns with an industry trend of deploying narrowbody jets for transoceanic flights, aiming to make smaller markets viable. United Airlines is expanding its reach with these jets as demand for transatlantic travel grows.

Patrick Quayle, United's Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, stated: "Our network provides the most choice and variety for our customers, whether they are looking for a relaxing seaside getaway, once-in-a-lifetime adventure travel or to explore some of the most vibrant urban escapes across the globe."

The flights will operate on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays until September 24, 2025. Departing late evening from Newark and arriving in Funchal in the morning, this overnight service caters to summer travelers seeking new destinations.

United's use of the Boeing 737 MAX extends beyond Funchal. It also includes services to Ponta Delgada in Portugal and upcoming flights to Nuuk, Greenland. This approach mirrors broader industry practices where airlines like WestJet and Icelandair employ similar aircraft models for cost-effective operations across oceans.

Prices for the Newark-Funchal route start at $793 round trip in economy class during mid-July. The move underscores United's strategy to tap into niche markets while leveraging next-generation narrowbody aircraft.
