Air New Zealand has begun testing onboard internet by offering high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity on two of its domestic aircraft. Starting today, passengers flying on the Airbus A320 jet, ZK OXE, will have access to free high-speed internet throughout their journey. An ATR aircraft will join the trial later this month.

The airline is using Starlink's low Earth orbit satellites to deliver seamless internet service capable of supporting activities such as streaming and online gaming. This technology allows passengers to stay connected for business or leisure, similar to being at home.

Nikhil Ravishankar, Air New Zealand's Chief Digital Officer, stated that the airline is committed to improving passenger experience through innovative technology. "We're committed to providing an exceptional experience for all our passengers, and this innovative technology could pave the way for more seamless, high-speed connectivity in the skies for Air New Zealand," he said.

The trial will also extend to regional aircraft with Starlink being installed on an ATR turboprop later this month. This move marks a global first for Wi-Fi trials on turboprop aircraft. Ravishankar noted, "Being the first airline in the world to trial Wi-Fi on a turboprop aircraft is a proud moment for us."

Air New Zealand aims to evaluate how well Starlink performs under real-world conditions and gather customer feedback during this test phase. The initiative is part of the airline's ongoing investment in digital innovation aimed at enhancing customer journeys.
