Japan Airlines has resumed its daily service from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport to Narita International Airport in Tokyo. The route, which was last operated by the airline in 2023 at a less frequent schedule, marks a return to pre-pandemic service levels.

CDA Commissioner Michael J. McMurray expressed his support for the renewed service, stating, "On behalf of Mayor Brandon Johnson, I am proud to welcome the return of JAL’s service to Narita at O’Hare International Airport." He added that the route enhances Chicago's global connectivity and provides travelers with convenient access to destinations in Japan and Asia.

The daily flights will depart from O'Hare at 12:30 p.m. Central Time on a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, accommodating up to 244 passengers. Koichiro Fujishima, Japan Airlines Vice President and Regional Manager Central Region, U.S.A., commented on the new service: "Japan Airlines is delighted to offer Asia-bound travelers more flight options to Japan and beyond from Chicago O’Hare starting June 1." He noted that this complements their existing service to Tokyo Haneda.

This new route increases Japan Airlines' seat capacity from Chicago to Tokyo to its highest level in nearly two decades. While Narita primarily serves as a hub for Asian connections, Haneda focuses on domestic Japanese routes. The introduction of this service coincides with what is expected to be a busy summer for Chicago airports, with O'Hare and Midway offering flights to about 265 global destinations. According to the Official Aviation Guide’s (OAG) 2024 Megahubs Index, Chicago maintains its status as the most connected airport system in the United States.
