The first MC-21-210 airliner, composed entirely of Russian-produced components, took its maiden flight on April 23, 2025. The aircraft, bearing tail number 73055, departed from the Irkutsk Aviation Plant’s airfield. This development comes amid ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine that have led to embargoes on imports from major Western manufacturers like Airbus and Boeing.

The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) has accelerated its efforts to produce domestic aircraft in response to these sanctions. The Russian commercial aviation sector previously relied heavily on foreign supply chains due to the significant market share held by Airbus and Boeing.

A cosmonaut named Oleg Kononeko, who holds a record for time spent in space, was part of the crew during this historic flight for Russian aerospace. The four-hour test flight included evaluations of various onboard systems such as radios and communication equipment.

Initially designed with international components like the Pratt & Whitney PW1000G engine and a Honeywell APU, the MC-21 project shifted focus towards domestic parts following the imposition of sanctions. Aerospace Global News reported UAC's comments on these updates: “The aircraft is equipped with fifth-generation PD-14 aircraft engines. These Russian engines have already been certified and are being mass-produced at UDC-Perm Motors. The aircraft also received a domestic auxiliary power unit, air conditioning and pressure control systems, lighting equipment and aircraft system consoles. Russian components are included in the power supply system, hydraulic systems and chassis.”

Certification for the MC-21-310 will require between 220 and 230 test flights according to UAC estimates. Yakovlev confirmed delays in certification but anticipates production readiness by summer 2026. The company plays a key role in "Russification" efforts for both the MC-21 and Sukhoi Superjet developments.

Ruavia noted that Yakovlev replaced all foreign avionics in both the MC-21 prototype and Superjet models. This aligns with broader goals to cover all domestic air routes with locally produced aircraft since at least 2021.

While challenges remain due to wartime conditions affecting industry progress, successful production of competitive jets could bolster Russia's aerospace sector against global giants like Boeing and Airbus.
