O'Hare and Midway International Airports in Chicago are preparing for a significant influx of travelers over the Independence Day holiday weekend. Airline projections estimate that 1.86 million passengers will pass through both airports from Wednesday, July 2, to Monday, July 7.

Mayor Brandon Johnson highlighted the city's appeal during this time: “Whether it is our world-renowned festivals, our beautiful parks and beaches, or the many cultural and sporting events taking place, no city compares to what Chicago has to offer in the summertime," he said. "From the moment travelers step off of a plane at O'Hare or Midway, we are ready to make them feel at home."

O'Hare is set to handle approximately 1.54 million passengers during this period—an increase compared to last year’s figures and surpassing numbers from 2019. The airport's busiest day is anticipated to be Sunday, July 6. Meanwhile, Midway expects around 320,000 passengers with its peak also on July 6.

Michael McMurray, Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA), emphasized the readiness of airport staff: “When folks come to Chicago during the busy summer season, the hard-working employees at our airports are always ready to provide first-class service."

Travelers using Chicago's airports are advised on several aspects including preventing traffic congestion by utilizing cell phone lots and public transit options like CTA lines and Metra services due to ongoing construction projects such as those on Kennedy Expressway.

Security processes have been enhanced with biometric screening introduced for U.S. citizens returning internationally at O'Hare. This system reduces processing times significantly while maintaining security standards.

Additionally, travelers aged 18 and older flying domestically must have a Real ID or an alternative acceptable form of identification as per TSA requirements.

Rideshare pickups at O’Hare are centrally located outside Terminal 2 and recently added locations in Terminal 3 facilitate easier access for app-based transport services like Uber and Lyft.

For dining options within O’Hare’s terminals, new concessions have been introduced offering diverse choices along with mobile ordering capabilities for convenience.

Live entertainment will be available across both airports over the holiday weekend featuring themed performances aimed at enhancing passenger experience during their travels.

Parents traveling with young children can find designated family-friendly spaces equipped with necessary amenities throughout both airports ensuring comfort while waiting for flights.
