A union employee at Flying Food Group's Schiller Park, Illinois facility has filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) seeking a vote to remove Unite Here Local 1 as the union representative for the workplace. This was stated in a report filing.

The National Labor Relations Board states that employees have the right to file an RD petition if they wish to end union representation at their workplace. This process is initiated when at least 30% of the bargaining unit supports the action. If this threshold is met, the NLRB will schedule a secret ballot election to determine whether the union should remain as the exclusive bargaining representative. These procedures and requirements are detailed in NLRB documentation.

According to Labor Union Reporter, UNITE HERE has faced statements from some current and former members who accuse it of using aggressive tactics to maintain influence. Workers at major locations, including Hilton Chicago and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), have spoken publicly about experiencing intimidation, retaliation, and a lack of transparency by union leadership. These issues have led some bargaining units, such as the one at Flying Food Group, to initiate the decertification process.

The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation reports ongoing federal complaints involving UNITE HERE, including charges from airline catering workers at O’Hare International Airport and LAX. These complaints allege unlawful dues collection, suppression of dissent, and pressuring workers who seek to end union representation. Meanwhile, companies like Flying Food Group emphasize their efforts to improve pay and benefits directly, separate from union involvement.

Unite Here Local 1 is part of the larger Unite Here union, which has approximately 300,000 members across the United States and Canada. Local 1 represents over 15,000 hospitality workers in Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Its members work in hotels, restaurants, airports, schools, stadiums, and casinos.
