Japan Airlines is implementing new technology at Tokyo Haneda Airport to enhance its ground operations. The airline, one of Japan's largest, aims to boost operational efficiency through a program called HALO. This technology is provided by Moonware, an American company that integrates artificial intelligence into ground traffic systems.

The introduction of this technology could aid Japan Airlines in expanding and modernizing its fleet and aircraft operations. While the airline operates many older aircraft, it has also placed orders for several next-generation jets to improve efficiency and passenger experience.

Japan Airlines and JAL Ground Services will test Moonware's HALO system to better manage operations at Haneda Airport, one of the world's busiest airports. According to Moonware, Japan Airlines' use of HALO will focus on improving resource management and coordination for below-the-wing functions. These advancements could potentially lower costs for the airline and enhance reliability.

HALO provides efficiency gains by coordinating various elements of airline ground operations within a centralized system. This modern system accounts for changes in dispatching while maintaining end-to-end visibility and live status updates. In short, HALO will help Japan Airlines streamline its ground operations.

Javier Vidal, Chief Executive Officer of Moonware, expressed optimism about the partnership with Japan Airlines in a press release: "Tokyo International Airport (HND) is one of the most dynamic and demanding airport environments in the world. Working alongside JAL and JGS to bring HALO into this setting represents a significant step in advancing how real-time decisions are made on the ground."

HALO can adapt to dynamic schedules, which is critical for the airline industry where operations can change rapidly due to various factors. Its dynamic task allocation makes it easier for teams to coordinate with other functional groups in response to changes.

Tasks will only be assigned to certified employees, ensuring safety and adherence to standards. Photos can be uploaded upon task completion for strong operational record-keeping. These features may benefit various airlines but are particularly useful for Japan Airlines at its busiest hub.

The proactive problem-solving and improved coordination offered by HALO might significantly benefit Japan Airlines by reducing costly delays and disruptions.

While HALO will help modernize ground operations, Japan Airlines is also renewing its fleet with new aircraft orders like Airbus A350s and Boeing 737 MAXs that offer better fuel efficiency compared to older models. Quieter engines and improved cabin designs further enhance customer experience.

Japan Airlines has ordered 38 Boeing 737 MAX 8s to replace aging Boeing 737-800 jets used primarily on short-haul routes throughout Japan as well as select international destinations in China and Taiwan.

Through investments in fleet renewal and ground operations modernization, Japan Airlines appears committed to enhancing business efficiency and profitability. The deal with Moonware underscores the importance of leveraging new technologies to address business challenges.
