American Airlines once operated a hub at Nashville International Airport (BNA) in Tennessee. The airline established the hub in 1986 due to Nashville's central location, which was ideal for connecting flights across the United States. Initially, American Airlines faced little competition at BNA and quickly expanded its operations.

By 1987, the airline offered nearly 100 daily flights from Nashville, including routes to Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). However, despite rapid growth in the early 1990s, the hub struggled financially.

The recession of the early 1990s led to a decline in passenger traffic. Most of American Airlines' traffic through BNA was transfer rather than local origin-and-destination traffic. Additionally, Southwest Airlines began expanding aggressively at BNA during this period, offering lower fares and more point-to-point services.

In 1995, American Airlines announced it would no longer operate BNA as a major hub and shifted focus to larger hubs like DFW and ORD. This decision resulted in layoffs and reduced flights from Nashville.

Southwest Airlines filled the void left by American Airlines at BNA. It capitalized on Nashville's central location and available gate space to expand its operations significantly. Today, Southwest is one of several airlines that have increased their presence at BNA.

Other airlines that have expanded operations at Nashville include Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, JetBlue, Frontier Airlines, Aer Lingus with flights to Dublin Airport (DUB), Air Canada to Toronto-Pearson International Airport (YYZ), British Airways to London-Heathrow International Airport (LHR), and Icelandair to Keflavík International Airport (KEF).

American Airlines now operates hubs across various locations in the US: Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), Miami International Airport (MIA), Washington National Airport (DCA), John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), among others.
