A few days after Avelo Airlines announced the closure of its Burbank base, Breeze Airways has stepped in to take over five routes previously operated by Avelo. This move includes adding a new airport pair that was not initially planned.

Routes often change hands between operators, with some performing better under new management. Breeze Airways frequently launches routes previously flown by other airlines like Avelo and Silver Airways. These are established markets with existing traffic and awareness.

Breeze has added several airports to its network: Arcata/Eureka, Burbank, Eugene, Redmond, and Pasco/Tri-Cities. Las Vegas and Provo are already part of their service area. The new routes will commence in March 2026 as Breeze adjusts to summer schedules based on IATA slot seasons.

Most of these routes will operate twice weekly, which is standard for Breeze. The airline will use the 137-seat Airbus A220-300 instead of the 147-seat Boeing 737-700 used by Avelo, resulting in reduced capacity but potentially better pricing and yields.

The US Department of Transportation reported that four out of five airport pairs had an average load factor of at least 80% under Avelo's operation up to April 2025. However, despite having significant passenger numbers on some routes like Burbank to Santa Rosa, the load factor was only 68%.

Avelo has been operating four out of these five routes since May 2021 and achieved notable passenger numbers during this period. Despite challenges at Burbank Airport leading to route closures since its first flight there in April 2021, moving aircraft elsewhere where they can perform better is seen as a sensible strategy for Avelo.
