A UPS Airlines Boeing 747-8F cargo aircraft sustained damage after an engine pod struck the runway during a landing at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport on Wednesday night. The incident happened as flight 5X61 was arriving from Hong Kong International Airport and attempting to land in challenging weather conditions caused by Typhoon Podul.

The aircraft made three approaches before successfully touching down, but its number four engine on the outer right side hit the runway, producing sparks and causing visible damage to the engine pod. The flight was operating as part of a regular cargo route that includes stops in Taipei and Anchorage before reaching its final destination in Louisville, Kentucky.

A spokesperson for UPS issued a statement regarding the event: "We are aware of the incident involving our aircraft while landing during strong gusting winds associated with Typhoon Podul. We are working with investigative authorities as they review the event. The aircraft is currently undergoing inspection and repairs and will return to service only after all safety protocols are met."

According to reports from Aviation Safety Network, windshear linked to Typhoon Podul significantly affected airport operations, resulting in delays for 180 departures and 141 arrivals at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport. Despite the difficult landing, the Boeing 747-8F taxied safely to the apron. Images taken after the incident show substantial damage to the nacelle and one separated cowling on the affected engine.

The aircraft involved, registered as N613UP, has not flown since the incident. Fleet data shows that this plane is just under seven years old, having been delivered new to UPS Airlines in November 2018 following an order placed two years earlier. N613UP is among 30 Boeing 747-8F freighters operated by UPS Airlines, which maintains a relatively young average age of just over six years for these jets.

UPS also operates older Boeing 747 freighter models, including two 747-400BCFs averaging nearly 32 years old and eleven 747-400F(SCD) jets with an average age of about 22 years.

There were no injuries reported in connection with this event.
