Air Canada is set to continue its use of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for some of its longest nonstop routes in 2025. The airline operates a fleet of 40 Boeing 787s, divided between eight 787-8s and 32 787-9s, making it the third-largest operator of the aircraft in North America. This positions Air Canada behind American Airlines and United Airlines but ahead of Aeromexico, WestJet, and Hawaiian Airlines.

The carrier's largest widebody fleet is the Boeing 787, which serves as a key part of its long-haul operations. The aircraft are based out of Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. The denser configuration of Air Canada's 787-8s—seating up to 255 passengers—makes them the densest among North American operators. The larger 787-9 seats up to 298 passengers.

While United Airlines has been noted for using its Dreamliners on ultra-long-haul flights such as San Francisco to Singapore and soon San Francisco to Adelaide, Air Canada also uses its Dreamliners on a variety of long-distance routes. According to data from Cirium, Air Canada's longest route operated by a Boeing 787 in September 2025 will be from Vancouver to Singapore. This flight covers a distance of approximately 6,923 nautical miles (12,822 kilometers) with scheduled flight times close to sixteen hours departing Canada.

Singapore is recognized as one of Asia’s most economically influential cities but has traditionally had fewer direct connections with North America due to distance constraints. Advances in aircraft technology—including the fuel efficiency and range offered by models like the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350—have enabled more viable nonstop service between these regions.

Other notable long-haul routes operated by Air Canada’s Dreamliners include Vancouver to Sydney (6,741 NM), Vancouver to Brisbane (6,388 NM), Vancouver to Bangkok (6,382 NM), and Montreal to Delhi (6,085 NM). From Toronto—the airline’s largest hub—the longest Dreamliner route is Toronto-Dubai at just under six thousand nautical miles.

The Boeing 787-8 variant mainly serves secondary European destinations from Toronto but also operates seasonal service such as Toronto–Osaka at nearly six thousand nautical miles.

Looking ahead, Air Canada expects delivery of eighteen new Boeing 787-10s beginning in 2026. These larger aircraft are expected primarily on high-demand European routes out of Toronto and Montreal and may lead to changes in how existing widebody types are deployed within the network.

The versatility and efficiency of the Boeing 787 family have allowed Air Canada not only to expand into new markets but also make previously unviable long-haul routes feasible for regular operation.

Air Canada continues leveraging the capabilities of modern widebody jets like the Dreamliner series for global expansion while awaiting future deliveries that could further reshape its international network.
