Cathay Cargo has launched the Air-Land Fresh Lane, becoming the first carrier to implement this initiative developed by the governments of Guangdong and Hong Kong SAR. The service allows for seamless import of perishable goods such as fruit and live or chilled seafood from overseas through Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) into the Greater Bay Area (GBA) via the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge (HZMB). Shipments are transported in temperature-controlled trucks equipped with accredited e-locks and GPS tracking under a single air waybill.

The process is further streamlined by a “Certificate for Transshipment Confirmation” issued by the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department. This certificate helps facilitate compliance with China’s regulations on imported fruit and live aquatic animals, enabling faster transit of perishable goods into Mainland China through Hong Kong. Support from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department exempts food importers from certain registration requirements, which speeds up logistics and reduces costs.

A new temperature-controlled inspection facility at HZMB Zhuhai Port’s integrated checkpoint provides additional security for spot-checks or sampling of fresh shipments. The Air-Land Fresh Lane aims to simplify booking procedures while offering cost savings compared to alternative trucking options for perishables entering the GBA.

James Evans, General Manager Cargo Commercial at Cathay Cargo, stated: “The new Air-Land Fresh Lane is great news for shippers looking to send premium perishable products into the heart of the GBA. The whole of the GBA is our home market; and as well as its export strength, we believe the GBA and its 86 million inhabitants also exert phenomenal consumer power. We can see high-quality perishables finding a new and exciting market with this new process, thanks to our partners at the Airport Authority Hong Kong, further strengthening Hong Kong International Airport’s status as the world’s busiest air cargo hub.”

The first use of Air-Land Fresh Lane took place in August with a shipment of live lobsters from Melbourne handled by Cathay Cargo. A subsequent consignment involved live geoducks from Los Angeles. Both shipments moved smoothly from aircraft to temperature-controlled trucks and crossed into Mainland China without delays.

Cathay Cargo holds IATA CEIV Fresh certification for handling perishables and offers its own customizable cool-chain solution called Cathay Fresh, which ensures end-to-end temperature control during transit.

This new expedited truck route complements Cathay Cargo’s existing intermodal services across the GBA, including regular trucking to six cities and bonded sea cargo routes connecting Dongguan with HKIA. Daily freighter flights to Guangzhou are also part of Cathay Cargo’s efforts to improve connectivity within the region.

These developments aim to strengthen Cathay Cargo’s network in the Greater Bay Area and ensure that perishables shipped globally arrive in optimal condition for consumers in this growing market.
