Spirit Airlines has announced that primary cardholders of its Free Spirit Travel More World Elite Mastercard will now receive two free checked bags on flights booked directly through the airline’s website or app. The new benefit is available to those who hold the card, which is issued by Bank of America.

According to Spirit, each checked bag can weigh up to 50 pounds and may include special items such as golf clubs or skis. The airline stated that this change is aimed at enhancing the value for its most loyal customers.

"Our most loyal Guests know they get the greatest value when they choose Spirit, and now the Free Spirit Travel More Mastercard makes flying with us even more rewarding," said Rana Ghosh, senior vice president and chief commercial officer at Spirit Airlines. "With two free checked bags, primary cardholders can enjoy more of what they love, including excellent value, great perks and an elevated travel experience."

In addition to the checked bag allowance, cardholders are also eligible for priority check-in and boarding, complimentary upgrades, and a 25% rebate on inflight food and drink purchases. New applicants for the credit card can earn 50,000 bonus points and a $100 flight voucher after spending at least $1,000 within the first 90 days of account opening.

The introduction of this perk comes shortly after Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy for the second time in less than a year. The company announced it would undergo a comprehensive restructuring process but plans to continue operating flights during this period. However, Spirit has reduced its flight schedule for November as part of these changes.

This move follows Southwest Airlines’ decision to discontinue its long-standing policy of offering two free checked bags per passenger. Southwest now charges $35 for a first checked bag and $45 for a second one.

Spirit offers three fare classes: value (the lowest-priced option with extra fees for seat selection and baggage), premium economy (which includes a free carry-on), and Spirit First (which provides one free checked bag).
