Jens Fehlinger, Chief Executive Officer | Swiss International Air Lines

SWISS has received its first Airbus A350-900, marking a significant update to its long-haul fleet. The aircraft, registered as HB-IFA and named 'Lausanne,' arrived at Zürich Airport after departing from Toulouse Blagnac Airport. Its arrival was celebrated with a water cannon salute and attended by employees and aviation enthusiasts.

The airline has ordered a total of 10 Airbus A350-900s, with deliveries expected to continue until 2031. SWISS plans to use these new jets to replace its older Airbus A340-300 aircraft, which have an average age of nearly 22 years. The introduction of the A350 is also intended to improve passenger experience through the new 'SWISS Senses' cabin layout. This configuration includes four first class suites, 45 business class flatbeds in a 1-2-1 arrangement, 38 premium economy seats in a 2-3-2 layout, and 156 economy seats arranged nine-abreast.

Jens Fehlinger, CEO of SWISS, commented on the milestone: "This aircraft represents everything we aim to be moving forward: efficient, advanced, and clearly positioned as a premium airline, from Switzerland and for Switzerland. With the A350, we’re taking a huge leap forward." He added that "with our Airbus A350, we’re transporting our customers into a new era of long-haul air travel."

According to the airline, the new cabin "offers a travel experience that raises comfort, design and technology to new heights," and "reflects SWISS’s aspirations to provide a truly premium air travel product that is fit for today." In addition to passenger comfort improvements, SWISS highlights that the A350 offers environmental benefits with emissions reduced by 25% compared to previous models and lower noise levels.

Before entering regular long-haul service, SWISS will operate the A350 on several short-haul European routes starting October 25. Destinations include Palma de Mallorca (PMI), Geneva (GVA), Düsseldorf (DUS), Hannover (HAJ), Malaga (AGP), and Prague (PRG). This initial deployment allows crews time to familiarize themselves with the aircraft before it begins transatlantic operations.

The first scheduled intercontinental flight for SWISS's Airbus A350-900 will be from Zürich to Boston Logan International Airport on November 20. This flight will also mark the debut of the carrier's updated long-haul inflight service featuring the new cabin design.
