Portugal's Council of Ministers has approved the acquisition of Embraer's A-29N Super Tucano for its air force. The A-29N offers enhanced features, including single-pilot operations and NATO compliance. This move aims to strengthen Portugal's defense capabilities and enhance its participation in peacekeeping and humanitarian missions.

The Portuguese Air Force is expected to acquire around a dozen A-29Ns, which have also attracted interest from other nations. According to a report by AirDataNews, this approval will pave the way for official negotiations to begin for the turboprop, already chosen by over 15 militaries worldwide.

A statement from the Council of Ministers indicated that this decision would entail "the beginning of technical and negotiating discussions with a view to the eventual acquisition." Although the exact number of planes has not been confirmed, reports suggest Portugal will acquire up to 12 units.

In April 2023, Embraer revealed it would offer a new NATO-compliant version of the A-29, called the A-29N. This version includes additional equipment and features such as single-pilot operations and a new datalink, enhancing its functionality. These features enable participation in JTAC (Joint Terminal Attack Controller) training missions and equip it with virtual, augmented or mixed-reality solutions.

Portugal has allocated over 180 million euros ($195 million) for acquiring a new close air support aircraft. The versatile A-29N fits this role well and can be used extensively as a training aircraft with reconnaissance capability. It is designed specifically with NATO customers in mind.

Portugal is also a customer of Embraer's KC-390 Millennium military transport, having ordered five advanced lifters. The country's air force currently operates two jets, with the second arriving recently. Together, the A-29N and KC-390 will significantly enhance Portugal's defensive capabilities and prove valuable on peacekeeping and humanitarian missions, particularly around Africa.

Embraer has strong ties in Portugal through its subsidiary company OGMA. Portugal's endorsement of the A-29N will likely benefit Embraer as it seeks additional foreign customers. The Netherlands is rumored to be interested in the aircraft, while Embraer is reportedly close to a deal with the Paraguayan Air Force for six airframes. Embraer's defense division will showcase both the A-29N and KC-390 Millennium at the upcoming Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) later this month.
