Boeing’s next-generation widebody aircraft, the 777X, is encountering further difficulties as its test fleet has been grounded. The aircraft, already delayed by several years, faces new setbacks after cracks were discovered in a critical component.

According to a report by The Air Current, a Boeing 777-9 test plane was found to have "cracks in the thrust link structure" following a flight to Kona. Additionally, issues with the engine mounting have been identified on two other 777-9 test planes.

The thrust link structure plays a crucial role in transferring thrust loads from the engine to the aft lower engine mount. Although designed to carry the engine even if one thrust link fails, this component's unique design is not shared with other currently operational aircraft. The engines of the 777X are notably larger and heavier compared to those on existing Boeing models.

Over 500 units of the 777X have been ordered, with deliveries most recently anticipated for 2026. This includes at least 403 orders for the 777-9 variant, along with orders for 43 -8s and 55 -8 freighters. Emirates has placed the largest order, while Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, ANA, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, and Korean Air are also significant customers. No U.S.-based airlines have placed orders for this model.

The impact of halting testing on delivery schedules remains uncertain and will depend on further findings from ongoing investigations. The first test flight of the Boeing 777X occurred four years ago.
