Alaska Airlines has reintroduced a program allowing Mileage Plan members to earn Elite-Qualifying Miles (EQMs) by purchasing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) credits. This initiative, running through December 31, 2024, offers an alternative to traditional mileage runs for those seeking elite status.

The program enables members to earn 500 EQMs for every $100 spent on SAF credits, with a cap of 5,000 EQMs per year. The purchase of these credits supports the development and use of SAF, contributing to Alaska Airlines' broader efforts in decarbonizing aviation as part of its "EverGreen journey."

"While SAF is a critical part of the journey to decarbonize aviation, it will take all of us to grow supply and make it commercially viable for widespread use. Alaska has an all-in approach to advance SAF, including engaging our guests in the journey while helping them meet their elite status goals," said Diana Birkett Rakow, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Sustainability at Alaska.

Alaska Airlines has been actively involved in advancing the market for SAF since 2010. The airline's efforts include partnerships with various companies and organizations, being the first U.S. carrier to operate several routes using SAF in 2011, and collaborating with E-Jet® company Twelve on executing the first commercial flight powered by E-Jet® fuel.

Despite its potential benefits—up to 80% lower carbon emissions than traditional jet fuel—SAF remains significantly more expensive and scarce. Less than 1% of current demand is met globally. However, Alaska Airlines continues to invest in initiatives aimed at scaling up production and making SAF commercially viable.

This initiative aligns with Alaska's ongoing sustainability strategy focused on reducing carbon emissions from operations while minimizing waste and protecting ecosystems.
