US Air Force's top five most common aircraft types

The United States Air Force, recognized as one of the most powerful air forces globally, operates an estimated 4,000 aircraft. This number increases to approximately 5,000 when trainers and drones are included. In comparison, China's air force comprises around 3,150 aircraft, while the combined fleet of the US Navy and Marines totals about 3,300.

Among the most common aircraft in the US Air Force is the F-16 Fighting Falcon. "The most common fighter jet remains the F-16 Fighting Falcon," with approximately 738 jets in combat service. The F-16 has been in service since August 1978, with over 4,600 units built. Despite being a fourth-generation fighter jet, continuous updates have kept it competitive.

Another significant aircraft is the B-52 Stratofortress. "The B-52 (also called BUFF) may be the oldest combat aircraft in the United States Air Force," yet it remains prevalent with 72 units in service out of a total of 744 built since February 1955. The B-52H is undergoing upgrades to extend its operational life well into future decades.
