A Delta Air Lines flight heading to Sydney from Los Angeles returned shortly after takeoff due to smoke detected in the galley. Flight DL43, an Airbus A350-900, departed from Los Angeles International Airport at 21:00 local time but turned back about 30 minutes into its journey. The aircraft landed safely at 21:33.

Delta spokesperson stated, "Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people. That’s why the flight crew followed established procedures to return to Los Angeles (LAX) after smoke was detected in the galley. We apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels."

Upon landing, medical attention was requested for passengers who might have been affected by the smoke, although no serious injuries were reported. Passengers were rebooked on later flights.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident. Their statement noted that "Delta Air Lines Flight 43 returned safely to Los Angeles International Airport around 9:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, Feb. 22, after the crew reported smoke and fumes in the flight deck." They confirmed an investigation would be conducted.

This incident follows a recent diversion of another Delta flight due to a smoke odor and other aviation incidents involving US carriers over past weeks.
