Apple's recent Share Item Location update, released in November, is gaining traction among major airlines globally. This enhanced functionality permits multiple people or third parties, including airlines, to track the location of an AirTag or other Apple accessories. The feature offers significant benefits for travelers with checked luggage; for instance, if travel partners are using AirTags on a shared checked bag, both can monitor its location even if they are on separate flights.

The update allows up to five people to share an AirTag's location simultaneously. This capability enables groups traveling together to coordinate meeting spots in crowded or confusing areas by sharing their AirTag locations. Additionally, allowing third parties such as airlines to access an AirTag's location can expedite the process of locating lost luggage.

For those not yet using Apple AirTags during travel, this new feature might be a compelling reason to start. Currently, a set of four Apple AirTags is available for $69.99 on Amazon—a notably low price—while individual tags are listed at $22.99.

Since the launch of Apple's Share Item Location feature, several major airlines have incorporated it into their customer service processes:

- Aer Lingus

- Air Canada

- Air New Zealand

- American Airlines

- Austrian Airlines

- British Airways

- Brussels Airlines

- Delta Air Lines

- Eurowings

- Iberia

- KLM

- Lufthansa

- Qantas

- Scandinavian Airlines

- Singapore Airlines

- Turkish Airlines

- United Airlines

- Virgin Atlantic

- Vueling

To share an AirTag's location, ensure your iPhone is running iOS version18.2 or higher and open the Find My app or iCloud Find My website. Within the "Items" tab, locate the desired AirTag and select "Share Item Location." Follow onscreen instructions to generate a shareable link.

This link can then be shared directly with contacts or pasted into airline customer service apps when seeking assistance with baggage retrieval.

The security of location data is maintained through authentication requirements; each recipient must verify their identity via their Apple account or email address before accessing the link. The sharing automatically ceases once you are reunited with your item but can also be manually stopped by the owner at any time. If not halted manually, each link expires after seven days.
