Passengers flying on routes to and from the UK faced considerable disruption during the winter months at the end of 2024 and the start of 2025. Such issues can arise for various reasons, including congestion, understaffing, strikes, or even factors beyond airlines' and airports' control, like the British weather. Regardless, such disruption can be a source of frustration for passengers.

A recent study by AirHelp has analyzed data to provide insight into the extent of winter disruption on UK routes over this period. In addition to establishing raw figures concerning the number of passengers impacted by disruption on UK routes over the winter, the company has also highlighted corridors that saw most guests affected by such issues.

AirHelp's study examined data concerning a three-month period from December 2024 to February 2025. The company noted that there were "over 195,000 registered flights departing from the UK" during this time frame, with "over 53 million people planned a trip during this period." This includes rush periods for Christmas and New Year getaways as well as February's half-term holiday at UK schools and romantic getaways for Valentine's Day.

According to data compiled by AirHelp as part of its study, 27% of passengers on UK routes faced some form of operational disruption over winter. For most customers, compensation eligibility only applies once a delay exceeds three hours; still, around 508,000 passengers met this threshold.

Delays are one concern but cancellations pose different challenges altogether. According to findings from AirHelp's study,"some "1.3 million passengers had their flights canceled during th e winter months," w ith .6% o f December flights being canceled . his figure rose slightly in January t o .7% before stabilizing at .2% in February .
