Icelandair Boeing 757 | Wikipedia

The Boeing 757, once a common sight in the skies, is now increasingly rare. In the UK, only Icelandair and United Airlines continue to operate passenger flights using this aircraft model. Recent retirements by other UK operators include Jet2 earlier this year and TUI Airways in 2021.

All remaining services are operated with the 757-200 model. Icelandair has leased its two 757-300s to Fly Khiv of Uzbekistan. London Heathrow remains a frequent destination for these aircraft.

Data from Cirium Diio indicates that between July and December, Icelandair and United plan a total of 699 departures from the UK using the Boeing 757. This represents a significant decrease compared to last year due to Jet2's retirement of the type. The summer season sees the majority of these flights, accounting for 84% of takeoffs.

Edinburgh will be central to these operations in the latter half of the year, primarily due to United's three routes from Newark, Washington Dulles, and Chicago O'Hare. The Newark route alone accounts for nearly four out of every ten flights during this period.

The Newark to Edinburgh service began in 2004 under Continental before United took over in 2012 following their merger. Over two decades, approximately 2.5 million passengers have flown on this route.

United plans up to seven daily departures on certain dates during peak summer months; however, this is down from as many as sixteen daily flights last year when Jet2 was still operating short-haul routes to Spain.

In summary, while sightings are becoming rarer, enthusiasts can still catch one of these flights on specific dates through December.
